"Man On Fire"
Chris' Review:
"Obey me, and I will love you."
Poor Denzel... that's all I have to say.
This movie sounds like a winner. You have Denzel Washington playing a washed-up ex-military guy who takes a job protecting a little girl in the dangerous streets of Mexico City. Of course, you can see where this goes. The little girl gets enamoured with her bodyguard and slowly wins this lost soul over... then she gets kidnapped. I mean, it's so obvious what is going to happen... but the concept is good. So Denzel, reading the script, thinks... yeah, I could do this movie. Little does he realize that Tony Scott just got out of film school and has only directed MTV commercials. The writing was weak, as well... I'm not sure if I should attribute that to the novelist or the screen writer... but it could have been much more than it was.
Denzel was adequate. He's a good actor, but this wasn't his best. Of course, there is always Christopher Walken who scares the bejezus out of you while delivering the most wonderful lines. Again, he has the best monologues in this movie. Face it, it's what he does best. But seeing through the intense delivery...the writing really could have used another draft.
The highlight of this movie had to be the little girl, Dakota Fanning. She was absolutely perfect. We're talking "Haley Joel" perfect. She was so natural on screen that you believed everything and even with the piss poor directing, you loved watching the movie. ... Unfortunately she gets kidnapped and is missing from half of the movie. Granted, it's the action half...but he movie was seriously lacking after she left.
As a low point in acting, her mom Lisa (Radha Mitchell) was pathetic. About two-thirds of the way through she suddenly discovers her southern accent. Really, the director should have caught that and shot her in the foot or something.
Now the direction. I mean, come on... how much more of this jumpy, zoom in zoom out, black and white to color, MTV-style crap do we have to put up with? I'm sure that a lot of it was used to indicate confusion or to make the action more thrilling.. but it was ineffective and irritating.
Overall, Christopher Walken - good. Dakota Fanning - very good. Rest of movie - El sucko! I give it one thumb down and I hope to god that it doesn't ruin anyone's career.

Jim's Review:
Jim took the week off to attend a concert. And, frankly, after reading Chris' review, he's glad he did. He'll see you next week.
