"Closed for Maintenance"

Jim's Review:

I dunno. I just couldn't get into it. The theatre, that is.

When we arrived at the theatre for Tuesday Movie Night, the parking lot was suspiciously empty, and there were paper signs hung on all of the doors. "Closed for Maintenance Tuesday, July 13th, and Wednesday, July 14th". Bummer. Nobody told us. Oh, well.

Still, we figured there'd be a few folks coming for the movie that we ought to wait for. So we dug out the Gameboys, threw on the link cable, and killed a little time playing "Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition". This was pretty fun.

Soon, Tobi and Erin showed up, and we all expressed mutual disappointment about the unexpectedly closed theatre. So, we made the decision to adjourn to the adjacent "Organ Piper Pizza" restaurant for a pie, some video games, and a little music.

The Organ Piper is a neat place. Not only is the pizza well above average (fresh, and obviously hand-tossed), but the music is fun. The organ in question is an enormous Wurlitzer that's attached not only to the traditional set of cathedral pipes, but also a whole host of other instruments all over the room that the organist can play via pedals, keys and switches. So, you may be sitting in a corner, and the previously-unseen wall-mounted drumset above your head could suddenly have light on it, and start cranking out a Sousa march beat. Or the glockenspiel along the railing will commence cranking out a melody line. Even the duck decoys lined up along one ledge may suddenly spring to life and start quacking in the middle of a song. It's impossible not to enjoy the unusual-ness of it all.

So, after pie and music, we played some video games in the nearby game room. I was a little bummed that the crane game didn't work, but no biggie.

Once we'd had our fill, the decision was made to adjourn to Chris' place for a little more Mortal Kombat...This time, on the Xbox. So, for a couple of hours, we drank soda, mashed buttons, beat the tar out of each other virtually, and laughed a lot.

Good times, good times.

So for those of you that wonder, even in a catastrophic event such as the theatre being closed, Tuesday Movie Night will continue. Just show up and we'll be there.

I'm going to give the evening 7 thumbs up. 2 points off for the disappointment of the theatre being unexpectedly closed, one off for the crane game at the Organ Piper being out of order, but 7 points in the plus column for good friends, good pizza, and the glory of video games.
