"Hitch"

Chris' Review:

"Never lie, steal, cheat or drink. But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away."

This movie was marketed as a great date movie. I have to wonder what genius thought that idea up. This is easily the worst date movie I could ever envision. Not to say that it's a bad movie. On the contrary, I enjoyed it. I'm just thinking that as a romantic comedy, it works... as a movie that a guy would bring his girlfriend to... not so much.

Now I'll tell you why. Hitch shows you three distinct types of men:

First we have the bumbling idiots that are Hitch's (Will Smith's) clientele. They're such nerds that they have to hire someone just to help them make first contact with a woman, in the process they do things that they wouldn't normally do, hold back as much as they can, in essence, lie to them, just to get the girl to like them. Then, if they're lucky, the girl still likes them when she finds out that they're bumbling idiots.

Second, we have the guy that is successful, charming and a complete asshole who will say anything just to get a girl into bed and then leave her in the morning.

Third, we have the successful, charming, sincere guy (Hitch) who is intuitive, creative, makes incredible plans and comes up with amazing comebacks right on the spot. Warning: Spoiler In his first attempt at the love interest, he simultaneously shoots down the competition and charms the ice-queen... then has a courier deliver her a walkie-talkie so he can invite her on a date in which he has said courier give her a present of a wet-suit because he's taking her jet-skiing to Ellis Island where he has bribed a guard to let him have a private tour so he can show her the signature of a long-past relative.

See... that last one doesn't seem so bad, does it? Except... the most creative thing you came up with was to bring your date to a movie... I hope you at least sprung for the big popcorn.

Ok, that aside, Hitch was very fun. Will Smith is back in his comfortable role as the charming, comedic, leading man. He makes nearly every scene work. The supporting actors are just as funny. Kevin James cuts his teeth on the silver screen and I couldn't be happier with the bite he took. The direction, camera work, everything is what I would consider par... as none of it jumped out at me. I never thought about any of it, so they did their respective jobs well.

Near the end, the story really started to drag. Making Smith jump through hoops really didn't go over as well as was intended and I started to lose interest. Smith is much better at playing the charming fool than he is the love-sick dork. Aside from that, it was definitely a movie I would enjoy watching again. I give it 6 thumbs up. I highly recommend this movie as instructional material for the geek in your life. I wish I had watched a movie like this when I was in high school, it would have given me a life-preserver in that drowning ocean of awkwardness around girls.
