"Boogeyman"
Chris' Review:
"When you get scared, close your eyes and count to five. It helps me."
"What happens when you get to six?"
Even a child can see that six seconds of this movie is going to be too
much. Boogeyman is the story of a man that is plagued by the belief
that his father was stolen by the "Boogeyman" when he was a child.
His psychologists keep trying to tell him that his father just left
and his subconscious made up the story to help him cope. Of course,
six seconds in we know that isn't the case. It's not going to be a
psychological journey through someone's head (which could have been
much scarier.). It's a straight up monster flick. That's fine.
Monster flicks can be good.
But not this one.
There is nothing even remotely redeeming about this movie. The plot,
if you can call it that, is so full of holes that you could drive a
truck through it. The scenery is typical with little to no
imagination. Artistic direction, soundtrack, lighting, special
effects... nothing to write home about. Heck, they're all so bland
that they don't even deserve their own sentence in my review! The
general direction is just haphazard. The story progresses, but with
no real explanation to anything.
Then there is the acting. Barry Watson plays Tim Jensen.... Barry is
a regular on 7th Heaven. A television show that is well known for
it's collection of bad actors playing cheesy parts. He does nothing
to shed this reputation. None of the actors in Boogeyman are really
any good. They all act like they could be doing a drama about their
mother being in the hospital more than being chased by an
unexplainable creature from the dark places in their closets. There
are no bright spots, even Lucy Lawless, who might have done something
to help the movie, is only on screen for 10 seconds at best. Come on!
Even if you look at Boogeyman for the cheese factor... it still fails.
It just takes itself way too seriously. There isn't one person, not
even Lucy Lawless, who makes it actually feel like they're in on the
joke. Actually, the small bit that Lucy plays is done pretty well...
but it's just too short. Anyway... I'm getting off track... no cheese
factor.
The only good thing I can say about the movie, was the scene that
played on the previews. The cinematography of it was really kind of
nice... One *blink* Two *blink* Three *blink* Four (with spittle for
effect) *blink* Five....
and out. That was nice... and it was a great tension builder.
Unfortunately it was followed thirty seconds later by the end of the
movie... "Is it over?" "Yeah, it's over." Excuse me? How the hell
do you know? Oh, I'm sorry, Barry, were you talking about your
career?
8 thumbs down. A bad idea, with bad writing, bad acting, and bad
visuals... gone bad. Don't expect to see it in my collection.
